Welcome to the Site of Ed!

I work for Motorola Solutions. Motorola Solutions is half of the company Motorola that split when the cellphone handset side of the business was sold as Motorola Mobility and both kept doing business as Motorola. We provide & maintain public safety communications systems that help first responders save people's lives every day around the world. We take the call from the wall where it enters the 911 center through the dispatch process, tower equipment, and all the way to the first responder's radio or laptop. I take a lot of pride in the fact that our systems work so well and our customers have such great systems.

I hold several industry certifications along with a myriad of Motorola specific training. Here are some of the industry certs I have;

I completed a BS in IT program at American Public University. I will finished my degree on August 27th, with a 3.667 grade average.

In my job, I work on a lot of tech. Since I enjoy my job, I like a lot of tech in my life and makes me a point of reference & assistance for my friends. I don't mind this because I learn a lot when I help anyone with a problem or help them when they are looking at new tech.

Tech Links

CNET - This site is tech news and new tech info. When I was learning PCs & windows, I learned a lot on this site. If you want to know more about tech and have little time, hit this site and read some articles. You will be surprised when you start having the tech answers at the water cooler meetings at work.

Shopping Sites

Spoofee - Daily Deals here, I read them with my email in the morning and throughout the day a couple of times.
NewEgg - The site I turned to when TigerDirect and me had a small problem. Their prices are sometimes better and I have never had a complaint. (Good Daily Deals to watch for)
Amazon - I use these guys since they have a lot of suppliers and often have the best price. Depending on what you are looking for, they have "used" items that work fine for me like books.

Just a note regarding these shopping sites, watch auto logging in to these websites. If you shop for something, often it will show up on the site or in an email from the vendor immediately. Sometimes I shop, then log in to buy so I don't have to get an email every time I visit their site.

My Tech

My primary desktop is a CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Supreme Liquid Cool SLC8240A Gaming Desktop - Intel Core i7-5820K Hex Core 3.3 GHz CPU, 32GB DDR4 RAM, MSI GTX 970 4GB, 2TB HDD, 1TB SSD, Liquid Cool, Win 10, & a 32" Vizio LCD TV for a monitor. I added a Razer blue backlit keyboard, Logitech Trackman marble, & Nostromo N52 gamepad. It is a delight and runs faster than I could have expected.

My backup is a Systemax Hex Core (That's six cores for you all without a dictionary handy). It actually does 12 threads at the same time so it should be a 12 core, but who cares right? It is liquid cooled using a Cooler Master Seidon 240M and silent, not to mention faster than light. All the accessories below transferred. I upgraded my video card from a GTX 660 to a GTX 760. Video runs like glass! I changed the main drive to a Samsung 840 500GB SSD & added the 240mm liquid cooler to my CPU.

I do add a Triton 3D headset if I have to get serious & focus on a game, since it allows me to hear subtle footsteps of someone lurking near me.

I fought switching to Mac, but I did for school and I have never looked back. I have a 15.4" Macbook Pro notebook with Retina display. If it was not for gaming or MS Access support, I would be using Macs full time at home.

My Windows laptop is a Toshiba i7 17.3". This thing is massive & I do not suffer when I go to the laptop.

My tablet is a Toshiba Thrive 32GB. I looked at ipads & other tablets but this one was my choice for performance vs. price. I looked for USB connection & replaceable battery as requirements. I hate the fact that Apple tries to control what you install & use on your device so I am Android all the way.

My personal phone is Galaxy Note 4. I work for Motorola, but the cell phone division was sold to Google so I do not have to be loyal so my work phone is a Galaxy S8. I love the huge display and battery life that the Note 4 has. My work service is VZW and my personal service is T-Mobile. If one service is down, hopefully the other is up. Update, I added wireless charging to both phones and life is even better! I got the Qi system which seemed to be the best. I got a single charging mat for work and a double mat for home. I have worn out charging jacks on phones before and this should eliminate that completely. You have to put a flat circuit inside the case against the battery, but any idiot can do it. You simply have to buy the circuit for your phone model and you are off & running. Life is good.

My TV is a Samsung 55" 3D LED D7000. It has a very thin border around it and looks like a huge liquid dispaly against the wall. If you question whether or not this is right for you, go to Best Buy and stand in front of one of these for a while. You can get a cheaper 55" TV, but they have thick borders and the picture isn't as good. Like anything tech, sometimes cheap is good and sometimes spending a few more dollars to get the nice one is worth it. As a side note, The power consumption on this TV is predicted at $16.00 a year which is much less than the 42" plasma that was heating my living room before and about a quarter of the total weight.

For my house, I have an Insteon hub that remotely controls lights, outlets, motion detectors, and cameras I can access it through the Internet. One of my cameras uploads pictures to my server and is located on my home ownership page, a little down the page.

Tech Service

I can fix a computer, if parts are available and generally only in a drop off situation. Away games are rare and only in emergencies. Parts availability generally only affects laptop repairs. You should bring your CD/DVD media in case of reinstallation. I cannot work on a business PC, only personal. (I won't risk my employment for mere money.)

Upgrades? Yep, I do them too. (I prefer to be involved in upgrade part selection to get one that matches and is the most trouble free.)

I generally spend a lot of time removing Worms, Viruses, Adware, & Bloatware. I backup first and normally leave you software on your box to protect yourself according to your level of tech understanding. (This is sometimes easy and sometimes very painful.)

I can beat a windows password! Yes that is correct! Did you or someone you know forget a password to windows? Did you buy a PC with a user account you can't delete? Is you PC administrator account protected? XP is easier, Vista & 7 are tougher. Win 8 is allegedly easier, although I haven't had the opportunity yet to beat their password.

Deleted items recovery is the real challenge. Did you accidentally delete something? If so, turn you pc OFF and unplug the power. Don't run your box doing anything since a lot of things are writing to the HDD behind the scenes and deleted files are considered blank space to write in. Getting it powered off before something overwrites the deleted file is the key. This is because a "deleted" file isn't really deleted by windows. It changes the first character in the filename and that tells the OS that the file is gone and ok to overwrite. Bring it to me and we'll see. IF data hasn't been overwritten, I should be able to get it back. This usually costs a little more and I normally provide a backup drive (USB or HDD) when I return your box so you have a backup of your pictures/documents or your whole machine.

Estimates are free for everything, feel free to email me with a request and see if I am in the ballpark. Most of the time I will tell you that if I am not successful, you don't pay.

My work comes first since it pays me much more and we put public safety above our time off. Be prepared to drop something off, I am usually a day or two on most things.
